Kerbal Space Program is still popular today because it contains all the elements that make PC games memorable: freedom, creativity, flexibility and mods. Mods really make the project better. The most worthy of them add new ships, parts for them and other little things to the Kerbal Space Program, allowing Kerbal to look just as fresh and exciting even after hundreds of hours of construction and various experiments.

The KSP gaming community has long fulfilled the dreams of many gamers - be it a full-scale copy of the ships " Enterprise" or " Serenity", recreated models of NASA's Apollo series of spacecraft or even the International Space Station. So, I present to you the best, in my opinion, mods for the Kerbal Space Program.

The first mod on the list is not really a mod, it's a program. CKAN is an open source mod manager developed and maintained by a team of enthusiasts. The fact is that the modding community often moves from one source to another: initially, Curse.com was the home of modders, and most of the largest mods were duplicated on the official forums of the game, while some were laid out separately on SpaceDock.

Given that there is no single source on the network, CKAN acts as a convenient intermediary, regularly updating data on all posted mods, automatically installing new versions and removing obsolete ones, and also notifies you of possible incompatibilities between different mods. If the developer of a particular mod advises you to install a set of other mods with it, then the CKAN application will prompt you to start installing additional mods. This is a great program that will come in handy if you are not going to be limited to just one or two mods.

In order to find a mod using CKAN, just enter the first letters of its name. The application will scan the entire database of mods contained on Curse and SpaceDock and display the entire list in the CKAN window.

Mods for a deeper immersion in the game

Some of my favorite mods make only minor changes to the game, but in total it makes it possible to make the gameplay more intense and realistic.

Do not forget: The volume of the alarms can be reduced if they are too annoying.

In space, no one will hear your scream, unless, of course, you press the button responsible for establishing a connection. The Chatterer mod includes real audio recordings from the Apollo 11 mission that have been shuffled and randomly included in the game. Realism is added by the constant signals of various instruments, thanks to which you can imagine yourself in the place of an astronaut who has fallen into a difficult situation and is trying to fix everything, following instructions from the command center.

Do not forget: The [-] key allows you to switch between all available cameras.

The Apollo missions took place long before we got to know the invention of the GoPro, but this does not prevent us from adding variety to the Kerbal gameplay. The Hullcam VDS mod allows you to add several additional cameras to the game that can be attached anywhere: both on the ship's hull and inside the rocket engine nozzle. Watching the rocket launch directly from a portable camera and watching the planet's surface rapidly recede, you feel like you are part of the program. In the same fashion, there is also a telescope similar to the Hubble, which allows you to look at distant planets.

Do not forget: Night crash will become even more spectacular if you add bright sparks.

Trying to make disasters and crashes more spectacular is quite in the spirit of Kerbal. The Collision FX mod adds sparks, smoke, clanging metal, clouds of dust and snow - depending on what surface you fall on. The creators have been working on the mod for several years, and therefore, in the latest version, the soil looks and behaves exactly the same as in real life. That's attention to detail!

It is worth noting the funny sound "Ugh" with which kerbals in Collision FX comment on the collision of the ship with space bodies.

Do not forget: RealPlume comes with SmokeScreen, a mod that allows you to customize engine effects.

Every time my kerbals died in another explosion, I caught myself thinking that the smoke lacked realism. RealPlume has taken care of this by making the engine exhausts in KSP more convincing (and adding the ability to change those engines!). After all, we spend a lot of time in KSP watching engines burn, so why not make it more enjoyable?

Do not forget: Entering the orbit of a planet with a multi-colored atmosphere, yours in the same colors.

I agree, this is an objectively useless mod. He shouldn't have been on this list. But I still love PlanetShine as it kind of mocks the over-the-top attention to detail that the modding community is known for. The principle of operation of this mod is simple: as soon as the ship enters the orbit of a certain planet, its body is painted in the colors of the atmosphere of this planet. The mod interacts perfectly with Environmental Visual Enhancements, which allows you to add night lighting and cloud effects.

Do not forget: The distance between parts in overview mode can be adjusted.

I love blueprints. I am neither an engineer nor an architect, but drawings and technical sketches fascinate me. The Kronal Vessel Viewer mod adds a view mode to the ship build process so you can make adjustments to the 2D blueprints of your spaceships. This allows you to schematically look at your achievements and figure out what was the secret of the success of the next mission. Just imagine: a detailed diagram of your ship, which somehow miraculously managed to fly to the moon, one day can get into school history books.

Mods with new tasks

Kerbal Space Program is an extremely difficult game, because it takes a long time to get used to all the rules of physics, and the universe seems to only want to undermine your self-confidence and destroy another ship. But if it seems to you that the game at a certain stage becomes too easy, if you do not have enough defeats, then you should pay attention to these mods that challenge even the most advanced testers.

Do not forget: Install as many solar panels as possible; the principle of operation of the satellite is now closer to the real one.

Previous companion mods (before the official release of the game) focused on scanning and finding resources. Now that resources have become a full-fledged part of the game, the SCANsat mod focuses on the main task of satellites: exploration. High-resolution satellite imagery allows players to identify safe landing zones, mark objects of interest, and determine if the biomes of a new planet need to be explored at all. Since even the smallest bodies in the universe have a very decent scale, this mod will be indispensable for anyone who wants to dive deeper into the study of space.

The user interface in KSP is relatively good, but Contracts+ takes usability to the next level. The mod allows you to sort contracts by name, date, profitability and other parameters. Moreover, you can create missions according to the terms of several contracts. For example, if you enter into 5 contracts and decide to complete 3 of them during one mission, then you can create the desired mission. This is much more convenient than the tiny task window from the original KSP.

Don't forget: If you think MechJeb is pure, install Kerbal Engineer. This mod adds a lot of additional information, allowing you to adjust your missions on the fly.

To date, one of the most popular mods for KSP is MechJeb. The ability to turn on the autopilot mode will be useful to all talented engineers and designers who have difficulty landing 80 tons of iron on other planets. The MechJeb will handle both landing and docking maneuvers in space with no problem.

Some argue that MechJeb is a real cheat. I fundamentally disagree with them. MechJeb will not let a hastily assembled ship take off and will not turn on the infinite fuel mode for you. If you are more comfortable designing missions than directing a shuttle, then there is nothing wrong with putting piloting in the hands of an expert ... And since there is no better expert than a computer, then disputes are meaningless. Good luck on your missions.

Don't forget: You can set an alert for ideal ship launch conditions and move to the right time of the year.

A lot of times in KSP, you have to blindly fast-forward time in the hope that you will get into the perfect window to launch. This element of uncertainty is easily eliminated with the help of the Kerbal Alarm Clock mod. Even though in the latest versions of KSP it has become much easier to guess the conditions for an ideal flight, this innovation will not be superfluous. You can set alerts for various events: orbit crossing, approaching satellites, etc. You can even link these alerts to real earth time.

Don't forget: The Target Window is also available from the cockpit, which means you can get into the role of a landing pilot. Stress! Voltage! Horror!

Navigation in KSP needs some work, but I don't think it deserves all the criticism that has been leveled at it. She does her job quite well. Her main mistake, as for me, is the docking of ships. Trying to maneuver in three dimensions with a one-dimensional target? This is stupid. The Docking Port Alignment mod adds a crosshair popup. We point at the target, adjust, take a position perpendicular to the target and carefully move towards it - all this with the help of one window.

But please note that this is not a MechJeb that takes care of docking completely, but this mod contains all the necessary information. If earlier I spent about 2 minutes on this, now 30 seconds are enough for me to make a docking maneuver.

Don't forget: If you have scientists on board, one-time experiments will automatically restart.

Among all the mods on this list, only this one can be called “cheating”. For Science! designed to automate the process of pumping technology points. For example, it is enough to lower the thermometer into the ocean, after which it will automatically send scanned data to the research base. And if you equip a research squad, put it on a plane and send it flying, then you will find a steady stream of new technology points. You no longer have to spend time on routine tasks that are only necessary to gain experience.

Multiplayer mods

Someone appreciates in KSP the opportunity to be alone with their experiments. And someone believes that docking can be made even more fun if the ships are controlled by friends. Initially, the creators of KSP planned to introduce multiplayer, but now, apparently, they have abandoned this idea. However, this idea was picked up by the modding community, which presented several solid options to the court of gamers.

Do not forget: Telemachus works (for the most part), but the mod is full of bugs of varying degrees. We recommend installing Houston (UI update), which will make Telemachus more visually pleasing.

The essence of the Telemachus mod is as follows: it extracts all flight data from KSP and puts it in a web browser. Magic, nothing else.

What is so good about it? This opens up a lot of possibilities. You can get together with friends and imagine that your tablets and laptops are part of a real command center. Or, for example, send a link to a friend in the browser during the flight. Or go even further and run a full-fledged space agency simulation. Let's say one player assumes the role of a pilot with a cockpit view, and the command center tells him that his ship is on fire (and indicate the duration of the fire and its severity). Throw in some simulated explosions and you'll have a fun party.

Dark is not exactly the original multiplayer mod, but it is the best of all the options available. At one time, he made a lot of noise on the network, because he gave thousands of players the opportunity to go to the same server with friends and build an orbiting space station together.

The main problem solved in multiplayer is time jumps: if, say, I fast forward two hours to catch up with my friend, then we will find ourselves in two parallel dimensions with two versions of the planet. Dark Multiplayer gets rid of such paradoxes without resorting to Doctor Who tricks - in this mod there is only one reality, which saves us from various four-dimensional embarrassments and Dalek invasions.
